How to choose a name (so that your customers love you)

I wanted to do a blood test during this COVID time. The medical representative came home and taken the blood test and went away. The next day, He came home with the results; luckily, all is well. He had given the medical records of the blood test, but very strangely, he started asking, “How is the spelling, sir.” I had gone through the medical description and could find some spelling mistakes but did not want to disappoint him. I had stated that all is well. But he is not satisfied again, repeating, “How is the spelling, sir.” Also, I had verbally noted that all is well. That is when he had opened his mask and pointed my hand and again asked me, “How is the swelling, sir”. Now, I got the point and said, “all is well,” but this time, my entire family laughed after listening to the word “swelling.”

We often don’t consider the right descriptive name necessary for the business, but when we want to share “spelling,” our customers will understand it as “swelling.” Hence, we need to carefully choose our business names so that what we are saying and what customers perceiving creates the same value.

In this Article, we will cover three sections as part of the naming of the business.

1. How to choose a Business Name
2. How to stay away from the business naming terminologies
3. Choose a name from Inside out

We will go through the first part of this Article.

Let’s go through on chossing a Business Name

When we choose a name, the customers will understand them in terms of the adjectives and verbs. The name’s quality or action gets into the customer’s mind than the actual title in simple names. All the great business names in this world evolve with this process. Also, we need to look for a word that begins a positioning process, which tells the prospect what the product’s primary benefit( which is again, quality). When you can predict the quality or action will become the generalized time, then you may need to ensure trademarking it as and when your company grows and evolves further.

For Example, when we say google, the action search took place in our mind. Google wants their company to represent as “search” first, then the name “Google.” Google’s word is “search.” When they picked the name, no one knew about google. But everyone knew about the search. Since google, as a company positioned “search” word, they are number one in searching the internet. Find that one word, either “adjective” or “action” as part of your name and position the adjective or verb at the customer’s mind with the name. Now, Let’s move to the second part.

How to stay away from the business naming terminologies

It is only practical that we can have names with alphabets and numbers as our business name. But when combining the words and numbers, there are specific names does not work at customers mind. Please try to choose a word that is not “Adjective” or “Verb” and add random numbers. That is what medical companies do. They don’t want you to remember the ingredients too much, so that you go and search the side effects. Hence adding random words and numbers not relevant to your audience will not make the name as famous as you can predict. If you want to choose your bad business name, please try like medical companies and request your customers to spell it. Of course, they may not like it. This brings us to the third part of the Article.

Choose a name from Inside out

What is mean by inside out? It means choosing the name near align with the actual activity the business does. When customers read the name, they don’t need to interpret what you do as a business. There is no second-guessing. They blindly get it. But when you choose a name with actual activity with adjective and verb, then it becomes very powerful.

For Example, when I was in Singapore, I used to visit a supermarket called FairPrice. I could see the FairPrice sign everywhere at this supermarket. Their positioning was excellent, and as soon as you enter the supermarket and look at the price, you will not feel the price is high because they have already positioned themselves as “Fair” + “Price.” Similarly, the one-dollar store name does not require positioning at all. They have already positioned themselves as they are selling all the products worth of one dollar. Now, let’s cover the summary.

Summary

Choosing a name is very important for your business. Often a name breaks or creates success with your business. But when you select a name aligned as part of your actual business with adjectives and verbs, customers will remember it. You also get a chance to explain your business since the adjectives and verbs are the one triggers the questions at your customer’s mind as ” How do you do it,” “Why it is like that” etc., Now, go and create a great name and purchase a right domain name for you as well.
