As of the end of the 2018 season, the Himalayan database reports that 295 people are known to have died climbing Everest, while there has been 9,159 successful summit climbs by 5,294 people. While climbing Mount Everest or running a business, one familiar enemy does not need our permission to accompany us. That enemy’s name is uncertainty. This article will go through three points to handle uncertainty and make it our ally.
- Magic of not becoming perfect
- Decoupling the uncertainty
- Living small and working big
Let’s go through the first point of this article.
Magic of not becoming perfect
If we put all our problems in one bucket and throw it at sea perfectly, what would we be left with? Most of the time, we will end up having more new problems since we aim for perfection in our life. Seeking perfectionism creates future problems with our current problems. Life is not perfect, and we cannot control life as we want. But most of the time, we have the opportunity to think the opposite way. That is, life is imperfect; we can face it and improvise on it. No one climbs Everest the perfect way. There is no ideal way to climb Everest since, most of the time, the conditions and death decision on that particular day. The fear of throwing away perfectionism causes our internal conflict, and we feel life is unsafe. But we can accept that there may be storms and mountains that we will see along the way, and if we set out to plan for it, the uncertainty loses its power. We need to have a strategy to handle uncertainty, and that is nothing but proper planning and having the right gear while climbing the mountain. Let’s go to the second part of the article.
Decoupling the uncertainty
Our uncertainty is mostly related to our future. No one can predict our future. Our future is not in a box that we can see it as an object. Our future is our present. If we decouple all our present state problems, we will have precise planning for our future. Rather than thinking about uncertainty as a whole, we can narrow down where we feel uncertainty and certainty. The moment we split our uncertainty as family, health, finance, social factors, career, and political problems, the uncertainty itself loses its power. Being very specific with our uncertain nature allows us to think profoundly and increases our ability to handle the uncertainty. Now uncertainty is decoupled, and we can start planning for our uncertainty and have a strategy towards addressing our uncertainties. Now, let’s cover the third part of the article.
Living small and working big
You get up early morning and think about the passion of brushing; you will not have it. There is no passion for brushing. Similarly, when we fall for doing only passion related projects, we miss the other projects we could have done better. We will never know certain things in our life unless we are set out to do it. Rather than following passion related projects, you can follow the problem-related projects. The passion associated projects are inside out, but the problem-related projects are outside in. So when you see a problem, then break it into small problems and work on it. The more you work, the more the passion comes out of it, and the work creates more results than you set out to imagine. One day you turn back, and you can see you have the Everest size of work and amused by your achievements. You will also see there is spiritual development, and passion is formed already. This way, you can live small with problems and work more towards attacking the problems and solve them. This kind of work is not new, and the ancients Hindus called this type of work Karma Yoga. That leads to our summary as well.
